The Haute Route Pyrenees (HRP) is an established route of around 800 km in length traversing the Pyrenees mountain range from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean and approximately following the border of France and Spain. There are three main walking routes across the Pyrenees - the GR10, the GR11 and the HRP. Th GR10 largely stays in France and is a somewhat lower level trail, whilst the GR11 is the Spanish trail and takes a more mountainous line. In contrast, the HRP is less of a trail and more of a concept, often crossing rough, trackless ground. It is not marked and utilises other trails, sticking to a high-level route as far as possible. There are many alternatives, although most people stick to the main route described in the guidebooks.
In October 2022, I made a 32 day traverse from Hendaye in the West to Banyuls sur Mer in the East, taking in many summits on the way. The trip was characterised by rich Autumn colours, hot weather and a week of storms and rain.
